Flame Propagation in Poiseuille Flow under Adiabatic Conditions

چکیده

We describe flame propagation in a channel subject to a Poiseuille flow, within the thermo-diffusive approximation and an adiabatic context. The two-dimensional flame fronts addressed may be either assisted or opposed by the flow. The problem is characterized by two parameters, the intensity of the flow u0 and the spatial scale e. The total burning rate and the propagation speed are determined in terms of u0 and e and different distinguished regimes are described. From the results, simple criteria for flame flashback in channels are identified. Conclusions concerning the long-term evolution of an ignition kernel in the present flow are also drawn. The results may also be useful in interpreting similar features encountered in more complicated flow situations. For example, the quadratic dependence of the burning rate on u0 for weak flow intensities, and linear dependence for larger u0, is similar to that of the turbulent flame speed when the latter is considered as a function of the velocity fluctuations or turbulence intensity. © 2001 by The Combustion Institute

Influence of Conductive Heat-Losses on the Propagation of Premixed Flames in Channels

We study the propagation of premixed flames in two-dimensional channels accounting for heat-losses by conduction to the channel’s walls and a prescribed Poiseuille flow. A diffusive-thermal model is used and the calculations reported are based on Arrhenius-type chemistry. Attention is focused on the influence of the magnitude of heat losses, the channel width, and the mean flow velocity. Specia...

Taylor dispersion and thermal expansion effects on flame propagation in a narrow channel

We investigate the propagation of a premixed flame subject to thermal expansion through a narrow channel against a Poiseuille flow of large amplitude. This is the first study to consider the effect of a large-amplitude flow, characterised by a Péclet number of order one, Pe= O(1), on a variable-density premixed flame in the asymptotic limit of a narrow channel. It is also the first study on Tay...

Pulsating and Hydrodynamic Instabilities at Large Lewis Numbers

The dynamic behavior of freely propagating premixed flames with large Lewis numbers was computationally simulated using a sixth-order central difference scheme and non-reflective boundary conditions. Results in the linear stage of the instability growth show that the growth rate dramatically decreases with increasing Lewis number and that the large activation energy excites the pulsating instab...

The thick flame asymptotic limit and Damköhler’s hypothesis

We derive analytical expressions for the burning rate of a flame propagating in a prescribed steady parallel flow whose scale is much smaller than the laminar flame thickness. In this specific context, the asymptotic results can be viewed as an analytical test of Damköhler’s hypothesis relating to the influence of the small scales in the flow on the flame; the increase in the effective diffusio...
